In our summer edition of our regular Book Group Series, we’ll be reading a teacher who comes up often in our community, Michael Stone, specifically his anthology Freeing the Body Freeing the Mind: Writings on the Connections Between Yoga and Buddhism. In this text, Michael brings together renowned teachers from both traditions to show how Buddhism and Yoga share similar roots, similar values, and a shared spiritual goal. In in our community, we often speak of both of these traditions in the same sentence, and this summer book group will hopefully bring out some of the inspiration of practice in the exploration of how these traditions bring us to our whole, embodied self.
This very special program combines self study, home practice, and community learning for an in-depth exploration of a variety of texts on Yoga, Buddhism, philosophy, and spiritual study. This book club is an opportunity to build sangha, or a community of seekers, in a spirit of individual exploration and is perfect for all of us non-joiners.
The summer book group will meet for seven weeks beginning Friday June 18th, with a group meeting on Friday August 6th at 7:30pm on Zoom. IMPORTANT NOTE: please consider ordering this book from your local book seller, rather than an online behemoth, which might take some time to receive your book. Please order as soon as you sign up so we can all begin together.
Each series includes:
Weekly reading and contemplative assignments. Contemplative practices draw from the themes of that week's reading, helping to integrate and explore the questions and ideas of the text in an embodied way, as well as sowing the seeds for a regular home practice.
Continual support throughout the session via email with myself and the book club community.
One culminating in-person community meeting to discuss the book, meet each other, and reflect on your experience.
Book club series is $40, and is available to all regardless of your ability to pay. If payment is an issue, scholarship options are available, just get in touch.
