In our fall edition of the book group, we will be reading Michelle Cassandra Johnson’s Skill in Action: Radicalizing Your Yoga Practice to Create a Just World. As practitioners who wish to uphold non-violence in our communities, our families, our lives, our hearts, and our practice, we are invited in this text to, as Johnson explains, “explore the deeply transformational practice of yoga, and become social change agents so that they can create a world that is just for all…The book explores liberation for ourselves and others, while asking us to engage in our own agency, whether that manifests as activism, volunteer work, or changing our relationships with others and ourselves”
We will be doubly aided by a book group format which Johnson so thoughtfully shares alongside this text, to allow all of us to get the most out of exploring some hard and essential topics such as power, privilege, liberation, and suffering. Since Johnson created her own practices and reflections, in appreciation of that work 50% of the cost of this book group will be donated to Sister Song: Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective.
The fall book group will meet for six weeks, with a group meeting on Friday October 9th at 7pm on Zoom. IMPORTANT NOTE: this book is sold directing from Johnson’s website, and WILL take some time to arrive. Please order as soon as you sign up so we can all begin together.
Our community reading group has been one of our favorite offerings for the past few years. This very special program combines self study, home practice, and community learning for an in-depth exploration of a variety of texts on Yoga, Buddhism, philosophy, and spiritual study. Book club is an opportunity to build sangha, or a community of seekers, in a spirit of individual exploration and is perfect for all of us non-joiners.
Our book group series includes:
Weekly reading and contemplative assignments. Contemplative practices draw from the themes of that week's reading, helping to integrate and explore the questions and ideas of the text in an embodied way, as well as sowing the seeds for a regular home practice.
Continual support throughout the session via email with myself and the book club community.
One culminating online community meeting to discuss the book, meet each other, and reflect on your experience.
Cost is $40. If payment is an issue, just get in touch.
